An issue for the Neighbourhood Plan is that the substantial buildings are now largely empty pending redevelopment. They have the potential for interim uses on short leases at low rents – encouraging small businesses, creative industries sector, etc.
Brighton & Hove City Council have proposed allocating the Coal Yard site as a waste management site. Both Hove Station Neighbourhood Forum and the owners of the site objected to this proposal and organised a petition.
